The Montessori Method carries the name of its founder, Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952). She originally worked with children with medical problems but found that many of these problems, in fact, were educational. Her method involves educating the “whole” child and she began its implementation in nursery schools in Rome. She realized that this method might as well be applied to children of all ages and found that the children excelled educationally. Her method involved the use of many of the materials which are used today in Montessori classrooms all over the world.
