Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Parent Volunteer Program at Granite Bay Montessori?

To encourage parent participation in providing valuable service to the school, the Parent Volunteer Program asks parents to volunteer 10 hours each year or pay a non-participation rate of $200 in additional tuition fees. This amount cannot be pro-rated if only partial hours are fulfilled. ALL of the 10 hours must be completed! Hours cannot be transferred to the next year.

What types of services can be performed?

Anything which benefits the school, school-related activities, or supports a group sponsored by the school (such as Parent Action Committee).

Events that require that supplies be donated (such as food, drink, utensils, paper goods, etc.) may be used as service hours (One service hour for each $10 spent).

Note: Donations of items that are not specifically requested do not count as service hours. (For example, donations of “parking lot sale” items are not considered as service hours.)

How Do I Find Out About Volunteering Possibilities?

Parent Service opportunities will be mailed early this summer and then will be in each newsletter. The name of the chairperson to contact will be included. Also, opportunities will be displayed on the scrolling “News” listing on our website. Early notice to the chairperson is very important for planning purposes.

Please turn in the parent survey form indicating areas of interest before June 1st. Committee chairpersons will be given the lists of interested parents. When volunteers are needed, the chairperson will call interested parents. If you indicated interest and do not receive a phone call, please contact the chairperson directly to offer your services.

If the school has an e-mail address for you, some announcements may be sent by e-mail. These are for your information only and do not need to be responded to! If we do not have your e-mail address and you would like to be contacted by e-mail, please leave that information in our front office.

There are service opportunities that may not be specifically listed: Committee meetings, lunch/supervisory help, work performed for a teacher outside of the regular class activities (such as making materials, sewing costumes, etc.). These hours should be reported also.

Who May Perform the Service Hours?

Only parents/grandparents or guardians may service hours for the family.

Who Keeps Track of Service Hours?

Parents are responsible for tracking their own hours. There is a Parent Service Report Form that can be downloaded from our website. Keep track of hours performed and have the chairperson of any event sign it. Work performed for teachers should be signed by that teacher. It may also be stamped by the office when items are delivered.

Please return the Service Form when required hours are completed. (Please keep a copy for yourself.) Return it only when the total 10 hours are completed. For those parents performing beyond the required number, please report those at the end of the year. (Remember, they are not transferable to the next year!)

All parent service hours must be reported in writing to the school office. Please do not report hours by telephone!

  • The deadline for reporting service hours is May 30 of each school year. Non-participating families will be billed $200 which must be paid by the start of the next school year.
  • “Extra” service hours do not carry over to the following year.
  • Service hours may begin May 15th for the following year.
  • Partial service hours do not get credit (i.e., less than 10).
